I teach.
It's my job.
I never really call it that, but it is. I always say, "I'm going to school." It's never really felt like work, even though it is A LOT of work, let me tell you! :)
SCHOOL IS MY JOB!! Isn't that crazy?? Crazy that (at times) growing up, I hated the thing that became my world. I remember changing my major to Elementary Education in College and thinking, "Wow! I finally got it right!" I have never regretted since that day.
I have taught numerous subjects, all grade levels, and all ages. Every year is different and every year is a new learning experience. As a teacher, I have to be open-minded and continue to embrace change constantly (even when I don't want to, lol)!
Nothing could have prepared me for this year. Nothing could have prepared any of us for the changes coming our way starting this school year. And you know what?? I work with some amazing women. We are all scared of change in some way, but I have never been more confident in teaching alongside these incredible teachers at my school. No complaints, just grown up conversations about things we all might not agree on, but respect each other. It's amazing to be a teacher and work with other teachers who care about you as a person!
You might be a parent sending your child to us for the first time! Your baby is coming to kindergarten during a global pandemic and you are scared. None of us blame you. I can assure you that we, and our administration, are doing everything asked of us to ensure we are teaching in a safe and functional environment. I have seen so many social media posts of adults and parents (not any that I know personally) complaining that teachers just want to sit at home and cut a check.
Listen here, buddy, I can tell you now, none of us do what we do for "the check". That truly makes me laugh out loud.
I truly care about your child's well being. I care they have fun and learn in an environment they thrive in. I love learning how to reach students where they are. I adore watching a student learn how to accomplish something they never thought possible. I love teaching kindergarten. It is a very pivotal year in a child's education. I am going to try my best to continue to make this year as "normal" as I can! I will follow the rules given to me because I expect rules to be followed in my own classroom. So far, we have done just that! It has been a great start to the year and I can’t wait to continue on this year’s journey!
Now, to the students.
I know this year might be different
And you might have been a little scared
It's okay to to be unsure,
but know all of us have cared
About you and your family
I hope you know it's true
That all of us teachers
Can't wait to see what makes you, YOU
We may wear funny masks
That make us look super
It has taken some getting used to
Don't let it put you in a stupor
We have many fun things planned
for all your friends and you
Music, Art, and Library
just to name a few
This year may not by normal
But what does normal even mean?
I can't wait to continue to be your teacher
And keep our classroom clean
We are all in this together
I wish everyone could see
How much this school year means
To people like you and me!
